Working With You, Seeking Health

The Philosophy of Osteopathy

An Osteopathic Manual Therapist (OMT) recognizes that all structures in the body are interconnected and interdependent. Any restriction in optimal body movement must correlate with a restriction in local or systemic circulation of the blood and lymphatics, which can provide opportunity for disease. An OMT recognizes that any deviation from optimal structure will cause the body to compensate and alter other, related structures. Over time, this can result in how the patient's health presents at any certain point.

What is Osteopathic Manual Therapy?

Osteopathy is a distinct form of manual (hands-on) therapy that is based on the sciences of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics. Our practitioners understand that health and healing can only include the whole person - mind, body, and spirit - and have a unique approach that integrates this perspective through working with the patient's body to reduce and eliminate abnormal tissue tension that is disruptive to the body's self healing and self regulating mechanisms.

What does abnormal or asymmetrical tension in the body mean for you?

The body is dynamic and functions best when it is in motion. With injury or long periods of inactivity, tissue becomes restricted and inflammation becomes stagnant. We will use a variety of gentle, hands-on tools that include active and passive range of motion, soft tissue mobilization, osteo-articular mobilization, myofascial release, visceral manipulation, and cranial-sacral therapy as determined by the patient's health history and presentation during treatment. Your practitioner will be able to listen to your body and choose the right tool for the job!
